Boerboel
General Description
The
Boerboel (pronounced - borbel), was bred during the Boer War in South Africa
during the time of settlers to the continent in the 1800's. The dog was a mix of
Mastiff and Bloodhound and were used as working dogs to fend off predators and
intruders to the settlers land. The breed today is the National Dog of South
Africa and its organization the South African Boerboel Association (SABT)
upholds the breeders quality of dog.
The general description: Males are approximately 25-40 inches tall at the head
and weigh 140-200 lbs. Females are 20-30 inches tall at the head and weigh
120-180 lbs. Colors are solid fawn, red and brindle only. They are working dogs
and are protective of their family and surroundings. They have a keen sense of
smell, sight and hearing. They are extremely affectionate despite their large
size and protective demeanor. They are extremely intelligent and trainable to
various activities as 'fetch' and 'roll over'. They make the best family companion. | |
